JI65 GATHERING AT RESTOREN CIK NAN ON MONDAY, 9TH FEBRUARY 3009
.
It all started over the dining table at Dr.Jalal's nice and comfortable house at Jalan Utara,  Petaling Jaya  on the afternoon of Sunday, 18th January 09, where we were enjoying the delicious "nasi briani gam", "laksa Johor" and other delicacies prepared by Yuha, Dr. Jalal's wife . At that time, we were there to view his exquisite collection of antiques. Except for Amek (for reasons best known to himself), the other members of JI65 (Jubli Intan 65) - Arbans (Rahim Abdullah), Ad (Fuad Rahman), Jed (Aziz Ishak), Wan Jah (Wan Hamzah), Bab (Anuar Ismail) and me (Roslan) - brought along our spouses for the occasion too. Among the topics of discussion was to hold the next gathering at Gob's restaurant in Senawang. Arbans mentioned that Gobs had moved his restaurant to a new premise at Senawang and somebody suggested that we should hold our next gathering there as a show of support for his business. Arbans good-naturedly agreed to organise the gathering..

Arbans, being a great organiser, soon managed to get about 50 names from members of Jubli Intan 65 to show interest to attend the gathering. He even managed to find a suitable date,  Monday, 9th February 09 which was a Public Holiday (Thaipusam) to hold the gathering. Sunday the 8th of February 09 was a Thaipusam day and therefore the following day was a public holiday too. The menu as agreed was to be the "Noghori" Sembilan dish. The lunch was to start at 12.30 pm and end at 4.30 pm.

Dr. Halim & Shahein

I went to the restaurant with my youngest son, Anuar. My wife, Salmiah could not accompany us as she had to go back to Dungun after receiving a sad news that her auntie had passed away that morning. When I arrived, Arbans, Dr.Hanif, Shahein, Dr.Jalal, Dato' Musjal, Bakaq and Ali Johar had either finished or about to finish their lunch. Ali looked like he needed some sleep, but he managed to hang on to his chair. Thank God that Gobs had purchased heavy-duty plastic chairs for his restaurant because lower-quality plastic chairs had been known to give way and collapse. Ali must have had a hearty lunch before my arrival. I almost couldn't recognise Musjal with all his thick beard. However his voice gave his identity away. I had forgotten how Shahein looked like -he joined MCKK at Lower Six and that was the year that I went to Brighton, U.Kingdom to further my studies. That day I managed to meet him again. Doc Haniff asked him to ask me how many children I have. After telling him that I have 14 children, I couldn't quite hear what his comments were before I excused myself to go up to the first floor to join Ad, DSL and Gobs to perform solat zuhur. I understand that, led by Dr.Jalal as the imam, Amek and Dr. Haniff had performed their solat earlier. After performing the solat, we went down to help ourselves to the food.

The "lauk-lauk" that were served that day were truly "Noghori" ("Minang"'s slang for "Negeri") in nature -

1."Gulai Kuning Ayam Kampung" and "Ikan Masin Genting"
2."Sambal Tempoyak Daun"
3."Ikan Sembilang Goreng Berlado" and "Gulai Pisang Mudo
4."Sambal Belacan dan Ulam-ulam."
5."Rendang Daging Masak Rembau."

(Don't ask me to translate them all in English, please)

I enjoyed the delicious  food very much and told myself that I should come to this restaurant more often in the near future. After taking the food,  we moved about and chatted with each other. I overheard Ad suggesting to Gobs to install a wi-fi and a TV projector to encourage more customers to patronise his restaurant. In the meantme, Dr. Halim and I made ourselves busy taking photographs.

Not long after, the JI65 golfers finally arrived. Though a few initially got lost, they all finally managed to find the restaurant. While they helped themselves to the food, the others who already had their food, were served with delicious "teh tarek kurang manis." Not long after, Bab grabbed the microphone. We thought he's going to sing karaoke to get the ball rolling or at least called Dr.Jalal to sing an A.Ramli's song, but it was not to be. He briefed us about the 44-year anniversary celebration to be held in Kuala Kangsar from October 16 to October 18, 2009. He also mentioned about the Coffee-Table Book Project and encouraged all members of JI65 to contribute at least an article each. He then called upon Bakaq, the Chief Editor, to come on stage to elaborate more about the project. Bakar said to us that we should assume that the book is like a piece of magazine with interesting articles, jokes and plenty of photos. He said that we could write on any subjects we like except those that go against Islamic teachings.

On behalf of JI65 members, we would like to thank Dato Sani for his generous contribution towards reimbursing for the food expenses. A special thank-you also to Arbans for organising the get-together at Restoren Nan successfully. It is hoped that in future, members of JI65 would frequent Restoran Cik Nan more often, especially those staying at Negeri Sembilan. Those who are staying in Selangor and K.Lumpur travelling to the South are encouraged to drop by the restaurant for dinner, lunch or tea on the way there and/or back. Over the weekend or Public Holiday, you can also take a drive with your family or friends to have lunch or dinner there. You can visit Restoran Cik Nan website  or call Gobs at 012-651 8451 if you need further information.
